Scoping
Phase.
Scoping Phase.
A human being is part of the whole – called by us ‘universe’, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest – a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature.
- Albert Einstein -
"Einstein understood the limitations we impose on ourselves by our way of thinking, which determines what we focus on and how we see the world. He asked us to question who we are and our relationships with all of life and the universe as a whole. Einstein invited us to explore a more systemic perspective, holistic thinking and an integrative consciousness that acknowledges our participatory intimacy with the universe, as a fundamentally interconnected and continuously transforming whole manifesting as patterns of energy, matter and consciousness. In this view, matter and consciousness, matter and life, matter and mind, matter and spirit are not separate but intertwined".

So how then do we explore a more systemic perspective?

How do we begin thinking holistically?

How do we expand our consciousness to perceive the fundamentally interconnected and continuously transforming whole?

Could our existence on earth be a classroom for the development and understanding of self?

Could our perceptions of the outside world, the natural world, provide the mentorship and guidance needed to transform our inner world?

And would the transformation of the individual's inner world then not translate to external transformation?

Can the (re)connection and ethos seeds of Biomimicry move us towards living the questions more deeply, towards the understanding of self, towards new ways of being?

How can I bring my whole self to this project?

What aspects of myself do I need to reconnect with?

Which life’s principles do I connect most with and why?
ButtonQuestions Explored During The Scoping Phase
Which life’s principles seem more abstract to me? Why? How can I connect with these more in my own lived experience?

Story of Place.
Understanding my local context required exploring the geographic location of Natures Valley in the Garden Route of the Western Cape as well as the community that I was living with at the time whose desire is to live more regeneratively. Mapping included environmental, social, and economic factors as well as stakeholders, existing resources, and potential learners..

Story of Learners.
I sought to understand the potential learners more deeply and did this by participating in organic storytelling encounters around the evening fires. Perspectives, ideas and philosophies were exchanged between individuals from all over the globe who travel through Wild Spirit.
I began to see that I was designing for a seeker. These were individuals with varying world views, from a variety of different cultures, economic backgrounds and life experiences with different relationships to nature, however there was a common thread - the openness to exploring new ways of being in this world.

Empathy Mapping
Asking these individuals to fill out a questionnaire would not have yielded the depth and breadth of sharing. We would not have connected, asked, explored, challenged, agreed, disagreed, giggled, sang, drummed and strummed or contemplated in silent moments in between. We would not have felt the ever so subtle shifts in atmosphere as conversations meandered into new territories. We would not have squeezed that little bit closer to the relative stranger next to us to make space for the fellow earthling, looking for a little place to rest at the fireside.

We are multidimensional beings and live in a multi dimensional universe where everything is connected - that which is visible to us in the material world and that which is not. Through energetic feedback loops occurring at the quantum scale, our mental models directly affect the material world we experience and in turn, these systems affect our experiences and shape our paradigms.
